Nordic Consumer Protection Authorities deepen their cooperation in strategic work on new consumer policy

The Nordic consumer protection authorities of Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden have a longstanding cooperation in protecting consumers. The Authorities meet on a regular basis to share experiences and ideas on how to strengthen consumer protection in the Nordic countries.

This year, the annual meeting took place in Sweden covering topics like the use of AI to boost online enforcement, experiences in combatting consumer fraud, and in particular, strategic cooperation such as consumer protection authorities’ role in consumer policy, and implementation and application of new legislation. An example of successful Nordic cooperation in this field is the non-paper on future consumer policy published by EU/EEA Members of the Nordic cooperation earlier this year.

During the meeting in Sweden, it was decided to further strengthen the strategic work and cooperation of the Nordic consumer protection authorities by establishing a Nordic taskforce on policy and strategies. The taskforce will complement the already existing case-handler groups on digital issues, misleading green claims, price information, protection of children, and financial services.

Joint Nordic efforts to improve consumer policy and strategies could, not only, have a positive impact on the Nordic market, but hopefully across Europe.

"Cooperation between the Nordic consumer protection authorities strengthens Nordic consumer policy and enhances the monitoring of consumer rights. The use of artificial intelligence and digital solutions opens up new opportunities for monitoring, and it is also important to share information about new working methods."
