I demand a standard compensation

In the event of flight delay, a standard compensation can be claimed from the airline. The amount of compensation is determined according to the distance of the flight and the delay caused by re-routing..

• 1,500 km or less, delay at destination over 3 hrs: 250 €
• Flight within the EU, over 1,500 km or more, delay at destination more than 3 hrs: 400 €
  
• Flight to a destination outside the EU of, 1,500-3,500 km, delay at destination more than 3 hrs: 400 €

Flight to or from a destination outside the EU of more than

• More than 3,500 km, delay at destination 3–4 hrs: 300 €
• More than 3,500 km, delay at destination more than 4 hrs: 600 €

The right to compensation does not apply if the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Extraordinary circumstances include, e.g. labour disputes, unsafe weather conditions, security risks, political instability and decisions related to air traffic administration causing the delay or cancellation.

A technical problem is rarely regarded as a valid reason for not paying compensation. Even unexpected technical problems caused by prematurely failing components cannot be considered as exceptional. In order to refuse to pay standard compensation to a passenger, an airline should be able to prove that the problem in question affected flight security and was caused by sabotage, terrorist acts or a hidden manufacturing fault applying to more than one aeroplane in the same fleet of which the manufacturer or a flight safety authority has published a notification.

If the airline places you in a class lower than that for which the ticket was purchased, it must refund part of the ticket price to you.

The airline must, within seven days, reimburse:

• 30% of the price of the ticket if the flight is 1,500 kilometres or less
• 50% of the price of the ticket if the flight is within he EU and over 1,500 kilometres in distance (with the exception of areas outside Europe that are under a Member State's control, such as the Canary Islands or French Polynesia) or if the destination is outside the EU and the distance is 1,500–3,500 kilometres
• 75% of the price of the ticket if the flight is to a destination outside the EU with a distance of over 3,500 kilometres or the destination is, e.g. the Canary Islands or French Polynesia.
