By 31 March 2020, the television antenna network will migrate fully to DVB-T2 technology to enable high-definition, or HD broadcasting. Because pay-TV will adopt DVB-T2 broadcasting earlier than other channels, households watching pay-TV programming in the antenna network are advised to follow the announcements made by their pay-TV operator regarding the changes.
Consumers using the antenna network will need a television or set-top box equipped with a DVB-T2 tuner to be able to watch TV programming after the upgrade.
To ensure a smooth transition to the new technology, antenna households should check whether their televisions or set-top boxes are equipped with a DVB-T2 tuner, which will allow them to watch TV programming after the upgrade. If neither device has a DVB-T2 tuner, the cheapest way to make your television work is probably to buy a set-top box with a DVB-T2 tuner.
How to check your device:
- If the technical specifications indicate that the device includes a DVB-T2 tuner, you can continue using it to watch TV programmes.
To check this, go to the www.testatutlaitteet.fi website, which contains a list of all terminal devices that have been tested in Finland for both the cable and the terrestrial television network. It will also tell you if your device has a DVB-T2 standard compliant tuner.
- Even if your television or set-top box is not equipped with a DVB-T2 tuner, you can continue watching programmes if you buy a set-top box equipped with a DVB-T2 tuner.
If you need to buy a TV or a set-top box in the near future, make sure the device is marked 'Antenna Ready HD'. This means it has been tested in Finland and can be used to watch television via the antenna network after migration to DVB-T2.
Consumers in antenna households are advised to stay alert when buying a new TV, as many electronics stores may still be selling equipment designed for the old broadcasting technology.
If you are unsure, ask the salesperson for assistance. Salespersons in electronics stores are required to tell the customer whether the television or set-top box can show television programmes after the change in broadcasting technology. This information must also be clearly displayed in online stores.
Migration to DVB-T2 technology will not affect programming broadcast by cable, satellite or IPTV.
