Since mid-June, Finnish consumers have enjoyed significantly lower prices of phone calls and Internet use while travelling in other EU countries. Roaming charges for consumers are now either the same as domestic call charges, or only include a small surcharge.
The key principle of the new EU regulation is that the cost of using your mobile phone while travelling periodically in EU and EEA countries is the same as in your home country. The new regulations regarding roaming charges apply to EU countries and Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
However, consumers should bear in mind that mobile phone charges abroad are different from those in their home countries. For instance, the regulations will not entirely end all roaming charges for Finnish mobile phone subscriptions, but there will be a regulated price cap on the surcharge.
Your operator may charge you extra if
- your operator has been granted a waiver by the authorities
- you exceed the fair use volume specified in your operator’s subscription agreement.
Contact your operator to check the terms and prices of roaming applicable to your subscription. When you travel abroad, you will automatically receive pricing information for mobile messaging from your own operator.
Pay attention to pricing when travelling outside Europe
When travelling outside Europe, the prices of mobile messaging may differ significantly depending on your destination and operator. Especially the prices of data services in your home country and abroad may be materially different.
All balance limit services are not necessarily available outside Europe. To avoid unpleasant surprises, remember to contact your operator before you travel to check the prices of services in your destination.
Check your phone settings
Most smart phones allow you to turn data roaming services on or off. Adjust your phone settings before you log in to any network abroad.
