After summer holidays the fitness centre marketing is booming again. The Consumer Ombudsman intervened in the marketing of several fitness centres in Finland in 2014–2015. Esport, Ideal Fit, Motivus and Sats Elixia had marketed their fitness centre membership at a specific price, while failing to reveal the total price of membership as well as all of the relevant information, as required by law, needed to take advantage of a special offer of this kind. These cases are covered in more detail in the Finnish Consumer Ombudsman’s Newsletter 4/2015.
In her editorial, the Consumer Ombudsman deals with marketing targeted at children. In relation to this important theme, there is a case in the newsletter about toy marketing in an unlawful manner with the Aku Ankka (Donald Duck) comic magazine published by Sanoma Finland Oy. Consumer Ombudsman admonished Sanoma Media Finland Oy for inappropriate marketing in violation of good practice.
Other topics include articles on consumer administration’s database in Finland and how it helps Consumer Ombudsman in her supervision tasks. Also the response of Consumer Ombudsman to Commission’s public consultation for consumer policy regulation with respect to online commerce involving digital content and tangible goods is covered.
