Price and additional charges in online stores

In online stores, it is of particular importance to display the price of the purchase and to state clearly that the item constitutes a paid purchase and not, for example, a free sample. If the seller does not state the price or provide information on possible additional charges as required by law before you make an online purchase, it is possible that you are not liable to pay for your order.

Seller must state the price of the online purchase in advance

Before you accept an online order, the seller must state the final total price of your order, including taxes as well as delivery and any other additional charges. For some products, the exact price cannot be reasonably calculated in advance due to the nature of the product. In such cases, the seller must state the grounds on which the price is calculated.

  • One example of such a product could be a service for which an hourly rate is charged, if it is impossible to know in advance how many hours it will take to complete the service. In this case, instead of the final total price, the seller must state the grounds for determining the price, i.e. how much the service costs per hour.

You have no obligation to pay any costs of which the seller has not informed you before you placed the order.

If necessary, the consumer must also be informed if the price has been determined individually on the basis of automated decision-making.

Information on additional charges must also be provided in advance

Before you accept an online order, the seller must inform you of any additional charges not included in the total price and delivery costs. In broad terms, additional charges refer to any costs arising from ancillary contracts or additional services, such as the installation of an item when the installation is purchased as an additional service.

In some cases, the ancillary costs cannot be reasonably calculated in advance due to the nature of the service. However, the seller must inform you that such additional costs may occur.

When you are placing an online order, any options which cause additional costs, such as additional services or ancillary contracts, may not be pre-selected by default.

You are not liable to pay any additional costs of which the seller has not informed you before the order was placed and to which you have not given your explicit consent. You have the right to a refund for any additional charges to which you have not consented.
